Optical Photon Counting Imaging Detectors with Nanosecond Time Resolution for Astronomy and Night Time Sensing

چکیده
Microchannel plate photon counting, imaging sensors with cross strip readouts having 18 mm active area format in sealed tube (optical sensing) configurations have been constructed. These have been tested with custom high-speed field programmable gate array based electronics for single event position and time encoding. The Super-GenII photocathodes used have response from 400 nm to 900 nm and peak quantum efficiency of between 16% and 19% at 500 nm. This sensor system achieves spatial resolution of ~30 μm FHWM (at gains of ~ 10). The encoding electronics can process high event rates (> 6 MHz input rates), and has event timing accuracy of better than ~1 ns. Local area counting rates of up to 40 kHz (100 μm spot) have been attained and image linearity and stability are better than 50 μm.

Remote sensing using small spacecraft arising from multi-objective economic activity problems is getting more and more developed. These satellites require very accurate pointing to specific locations of interest, with high reliability and small latency. The space borne imaging systems always attempted to achieve the highest ground resolution possible with the available technology at the given t...
متن کاملEnhanced detection of early photons in time-domain optical imaging by running in the "dead-time" regime.
Optical tomography can yield anatomical and molecular information about biological tissue. However, its spatial resolution is poor in thick samples owing to high scatter. Early photon approaches, where photon arrival times are measured with time-resolved detectors, provide one means of improving spatial resolution through selection of photons that travel a straighter path. Here, a novel approac...
متن کاملLong-haul and high-resolution optical time domain reflectometry using superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors
In classical optical time domain reflectometries (OTDRs), for sensing an 200-km-long fiber, the optical pulses launched are as wide as tens of microseconds to get enough signal-to-noise ratio, while it results in a two-point resolution of kilometers. To both reach long sensing distance and sub-kilometer resolution, we demonstrated a long-haul photon-counting OTDR using a superconducting nanowir...

Photon-counting detectors can be used in optical communications links to provide a large enhancement in receiver sensitivity over conventional photodetectors at near-infrared wavelengths (1.3–1.55 microns) [1]. However, the highest data rate that has been demonstrated to date using these techniques is about 100 kbits/sec for a receiver consisting of a single InGaAs avalanche photodiode (APD), w...
